Julie Collins

New Zealand Sign Language or NZSL is the main language of the deaf community in New Zealand. It became an official language of New Zealand in April 2006 under the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006.

Julie Collins emigrated from the UK a decade ago with her engineering husband, for the rebuild of Christchurch.

With over 12 years of working and volunteering in the Deaf world in NZ and the UK, Julie is passionate about sign language and Deaf culture and breaking down barriers, so everyone has equal access to important information and employment.

Julie qualified as an intern interpreter in the UK and was employed by the largest Deaf school in the UK.

She and her husband love living in New Zealand! She enjoys swimming and teaches singing and acting classes.

She’s excited to be teaching you New Zealand Sign Language in 2023!
