My serious art career started in 1983 enrolling in a Diploma in Visual Communication at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. I majored in Graphic Design & minored in Photography & Print making.
This was to turn out to be the start of a full time career in the creative arts. I worked as a freelance commercial artist for a number of years and further study led to a Bachelor of Design Degree in Visual Communication. I was employed at CPIT (Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, later Ara) for 25 years as tutor in 2 Dimensional studies in Art & Design in the Degree programme and was responsible for developing and teaching the Painting elective. I retired In 2020 to continue exploring Te Waipounamu and to paint.
It can be very daunting as a beginner getting started in the world of painting. So much information out there, do’s and don’ts, ideas and approaches that it can all become too overwhelming and a barrier to picking up a brush. It doesn’t have to be like that. I enjoy helping beginners take those first steps, encourage them to embrace what they do and to appreciate their untapped ability.
