NZ Sign Language Level 1b
Due to Tutor shortages, we are only able to offer NZ Sign Language level 1a for term 1 2019. Thanks for your understanding.
Level 1 (General Information)
NZ Sign Language is the language used by people within the Deaf Community. You will gain a general understanding of the Deaf community and their culture, identity and sign language. It is a visual-gestural language, which conveys ideas by signs, facial expressions, body language and lip patterns. It has its own grammar, rules and sentence structure which is different from English or Maori.
Level 1 is offered at a range of levels, designed for students to follow from one to the next. Course content is indicative and will depend on each group of students’ ability but in general, tutors follow the NZ Sign Language Level 1 Community Education Curriculum. Next step, once satisfactorily completing 1b, is to enrol in Level 1c.
As with all languages, your willingness to practice given exercises at home will greatly influence your success and enjoyment of the language.
NZ Sign Language Level 1b
This course is suitable for those who have completed at least 16 hours of sign language. Topics to cover will include family and friends and everyday activities.
Students need to choose the day of the week they wish to attend e.g. enrol in the Monday class and attend this class on Mondays for the remainder of the term. This does not mean that you attend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
