Arabic Language Level 2

Arabic Language Level 2

The best time to join our language classes is at the beginning of each term.

Arabic is a Central Semitic language, closely related to Aramaic, Hebrew, and Phoenician. It is the only surviving member of the Ancient North Arabian dialect group, dating back to the 4th century.

Arabic is one of the six most-spoken languages in the world, spoken by around 420 million speakers (native and non-native) in the Arab world. It is also a liturgical language for 1.6 billion Muslims around the world. Moreover Arabic is one of six official languages of the United Nations.

Throughout its history Arabic has influenced many languages around the globe. During the middle ages, Literary Arabic was a major vehicle of culture in Europe, especially in science, mathematics, and philosophy. As a result, many European languages have also borrowed many words from it.

English, for example, has many Arabic loan words, some directly but most through the medium of other Mediterranean languages. Examples of such words include: admiral, adobe, alchemy, alcohol, algebra, algorithm, alkaline, almanac, amber, arsenal, assassin, candy, carat, cipher, coffee, cotton, ghoul, hazard, jar, Kismet, lemon, loofah, magazine, mattress, sherbet, sofa, sumac, tariff, and many others.

This course is for those who have completed the Level 1 or have equivalent experience confidence in speaking Arabic.

About your tutor

Hisham, an Egyptian born general surgeon, migrated to New Zealand 17 years ago. Arabic being his mother tongue allowed him to teach the language as he studied it and practiced it for most of his life, In 1993 he tutored an Arabic language course for non-Arabic speaking Muslims at the Hagley Community College. In that course he was teaching Classical Arabic, the mother of today’s Modern Standard Arabic, since then he has delivered further courses to his community.
