Cake Decoration Beginners

Cake Decorating is offered on Tuesdays at Risingholme and Wednesdays at Riccarton.  Please scroll down for more information about both courses.

Cake Decorating (Tuesdays at Risingholme)
Learn how to use sugar past for simple cake decorations including sugar paste roses. Cover and decorate a celebration cake. No previous cake decorating experience required. This course caters for beginner as well as more experienced students – students will be guided through a range of levels as they start. Students to provide their own equipment and ingredients. An equipment list will be sent out after enrolment. The tutor will discuss various levels with students on first night.

Cake Decoration (Wednesday)
Learn how to decorate a cake for a special occasion. The course will help you cover a cake in Sugar Paste (roll out icing) and decorate it. Students will be taught how to cover a cake; decorate a cake in a variety of ways; make Royal icing; paper icing bags; how to pipe shells and write in icing on a cake. We will work on dummy cakes, and cake boards at times, as well as a fruit cake and a sponge cake. Material costs approx $25.  An Intermediate course will be offered in Term 4.

About your tutors

Terry Elliott has been teaching Cake Decorating since 1980.  She was a member of the Canterbury Cake Decorators Guild for 10 years.  She has won 7 medals in cake decorating competitions such as gold medals in the National Salon Culinaire competitions.  She holds an International Judges A grade Certificate (Australia) and has worked as a travelling demonstrator for the Canterbury Cake Decorators Guild.   She has exhibited her work at local and international exhibitions and is keen to share her skills with her students. Classes are easy and she tries to accommodate all the students’ requests and adapts the course to suit the students.


Sandra McSherry has been teaching cake decorating for over 10 years.  She is a member of the Redwood Sugarcraft Guild and has exhibited her work in local and national exhibitions.  She has won awards for her work.
