LOCAL MATERIALS FOR CERAMIC SURFACES         Risingholme           J

A workshop and field trip for potters interested in using local natural materials in their work.  You will learn how to find them, prepare and use them (and learn some natural history along the way).

The workshop will cover simple principles that govern the composition of glazes, terra sigilatas and colourants and how these are related to local rocks and minerals. How molten volcanic larva cools and crystallizes will be discussed and how it is weathered and moved around the landscape by wind and water and ultimately can be converted back to rock like structures through the potter's work.   We will look at pots that have incorporate local earth and rock materials found in the Port Hills area then visit five sites where these naturally occurring clays and oxides were found.  This part of the workshop will focus on how to identify places to look for interesting materials and how to recognise them in the field and collect them.

The two week interval between the two workshop sessions will give time for materials collected on the field trip to be dried properly which will speed up glaze preparation on the second day.

On the second day, a range of simple but interesting glazes will be prepared and applied to test tiles and bisqued pots.  These will be fired and then collected by arrangement. A summary document with recipes and a discussion of the outcomes will be provided.  Bring outdoor clothing.  Transport to be arranged for the field trip.
