Pottery Fridays
Potters, both beginners and experienced, are confronted with a large array of recipes, information, advice and opinion about glazes for potters.
Frequently, the most useful basic information gets lost in this jungle of detail and the way forward becomes very difficult to find. In this class, we take a simple hands on approach to learning about glaze composition, and how it relates to the world around us, through making and modifying some simple but very attractive glazes based on common local rock and earth materials.
We have a wide range of materials collected from around Canterbury and class members are encouraged to collect their own materials as well. Some very nice glazes can be made for instance from local garden soils.
What to look for and why, where to look and how to prepare your findings for use in glazes are discussed and demonstrated. There will be opportunities to make pots for glaze testing.
Continuing students can develop individual projects.
