Watercolour, acrylic, oil, pastel and a variety of drawing materials are covered in this course. You can choose to work in any medium. Helpful advice is given on quality and cost of art materials. This class has a relaxed, friendly and supportive environment. Demonstrations on various techniques are given at appropriate times.

FORM AND FUSION – CREATE JEWELLERY FROM GLASS

Learn how to fuse glass into a variety of forms to make jewellery such as earrings and pendants. All students will learn to use various glass types and colour combinations and will produce unique pieces of jewellery. All materials provided.

Come and have fun using watercolour plus additives (e.g. using meths, wax resist, salt etc.) making non-traditional effects useful in both traditional and non-traditional watercolour paintings. Being able to draw would be helpful but not necessary. Individual attention given to each student in a friendly and warm setting. Additives needed will be discussed on the first night. CARD-a-RAMA

In this one day workshop, you will learn a variety of card making skills including stamping, embossing, colouring and layering. You will make cards suitable for females, males, children and babies as well as for special or seasonal occasions. Bring own scissors, ruler, pen, pencil, double sided sellotape, glue stick and cutting board (optional). Tutor to supply materials – students will need to spend on average $5-$10 – tutors will discuss options. Bring own lunch.

FLORAL ART

Learn how to beautify your home using flowers from the garden. Learn basic floral design elements and principles in order to apply these rules, or to enjoy breaking them to make wonderful arrangements. Oasis and extra material required can be purchased from the tutor as required. Bring flowers and foliage on the first night (with stems at least 20-30 cm long) and a vase of your own choice, as well as scissors, secateurs, pen and paper.

FOLK ART & DECORATIVE PAINTING

Classes for those interested in learning to decorate in the Folk Art tradition, which goes back centuries. Folk Art designs reflect one thing – the wish to own something beautiful, something you’ve decorated yourself.

This is a relaxed, friendly class that is suitable for both beginners and those with experience. In this class, students are encouraged to develop their individual creativity. Personal tuition is given to each student in the medium of their choice. Experimentation with a variety of media is encouraged and supported. Basics covered include: drawing, oil, watercolour and acrylic painting and pastels. Students are to provide their own art materials. This will be discussed at the first session. On the first morning, bring the following: A3 Sketch pad, 2b, 3b, 6b pencils, rubber, craft knife. Do bring any painting materials you may already be using.

Acrylics painting is a rewarding and uncomplicated medium to learn to use. You will gain confidence in your ability to paint by applying simple methods and techniques. Each session we will do colour studies and exercises giving you a firm grounding and knowledge that you will then be able to explore and use in your own work. We also look at how to incorporate collage into a work of art. This course is ideal for beginners and for more experienced painters and is an exciting way to develop your interest in artistic and creative pursuits. INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACT ART

Students are introduced to a range of contemporary abstract artists and techniques including layering, mixed media, grid format, expressive use of colour, symbols and motifs, and abstracting natural objects. Each class begins with discussion on a particular abstract artist and their techniques, student’s then explore these techniques in an artwork of their own, using still life, natural objects and landscape as starting points. Students are introduced to colour theory and colour mixing using mediums of acrylic paint, and oil and soft pastel. The works and writings of the Old Masters, Impressionists, Expressionists and the American Abstract Expressionists are used as references. J

Fee $ 40 per term
This informal class offers students the chance to use skills and techniques previously learned to create pictures with confidence at their own pace. Set topics are introduced enabling students to work with a variety of media to make their own pictures. Once a month (first Thursday of the month), students will have an opportunity to have their work evaluated by an experienced art tutor -these dates to be confirmed by the tutor. This class only open to previous Wednesday and Thursday mornings students with Judith Hitchings. Check with office re starting dates each term.
